At The Dance Factory, we believe that becoming a well-rounded dancer means exploring more than just one style. Every genre of dance offers unique skills, techniques, and opportunities for growth. Whether you’re a beginner discovering your passion or an experienced dancer looking to strengthen your training, learning multiple styles can help you become a more versatile, confident, and expressive performer.

So, what does each dance style bring to your training? Let’s break it down!

Ballet: Precision, Strength, and Control

Ballet develops precision, balance, flexibility, strength, alignment, and body awareness. Through barre work, center exercises, and across-the-floor combinations, dancers build control, discipline, and an understanding of movement quality.

While ballet has its own distinct technique and traditions, the skills developed through ballet training can also support dancers as they explore other genres. It encourages attention to detail, consistency, and intentional movement, helping dancers continue to challenge themselves and grow.

What it builds: Technique, balance, strength, flexibility, alignment, and control.

Jazz: Energy, Technique, and Performance

Jazz is all about dynamic movement, musicality, and personality! This style combines sharp movements, turns, leaps, kicks, and engaging choreography that challenges dancers to develop both technique and performance quality.

Jazz encourages dancers to explore different movement qualities while building coordination, stamina, and confidence. It also teaches performers how to connect with the music and bring their own energy to the stage.

What it builds: Coordination, flexibility, musicality, stamina, and performance skills.

Tap: Rhythm and Musicality

Tap transforms dancers into musicians with their feet! By creating rhythms and sounds through intricate footwork, dancers develop a deeper understanding of timing, tempo, and musical patterns.

Tap also strengthens coordination, listening skills, and precision. Dancers learn to recognize rhythms, maintain consistency, and work with the music in a completely different way.

What it builds: Rhythm, timing, coordination, musicality, and precision.

Lyrical and Contemporary: Emotion Through Movement

Lyrical and contemporary dance allow dancers to connect movement with emotion and storytelling. These styles combine elements of ballet, jazz, and other movement techniques to create expressive, fluid, and often powerful choreography.

Dancers learn to interpret music, explore dynamics, and communicate a story through their movement. These genres also encourage body awareness, control, flexibility, and artistic individuality.

What they build: Expression, musical interpretation, fluidity, control, and storytelling.

Hip-Hop: Movement, Culture, and Individuality

Hip-hop is much more than a dance style — it is a culture with deep roots in community, creativity, self-expression, and history. Originating in the Bronx, New York City, during the 1970s, hip-hop developed as part of a broader cultural movement encompassing DJing, MCing, graffiti art, and dance, including styles and practices such as breaking.

In the dance studio, hip-hop challenges dancers to develop groove, rhythm, coordination, musical interpretation, and individuality. Dancers explore different movement qualities while learning to connect with the music and express their own personalities. Understanding and respecting the culture behind the movement is an important part of learning the style.

Hip-hop also encourages dancers to embrace creativity, build confidence, and appreciate the community and history that continue to shape the culture today.

What it builds: Groove, rhythm, coordination, confidence, individuality, cultural awareness, and musicality.

Acro: Strength, Flexibility, and Control

Acro combines dance technique with acrobatic skills, including balances, walkovers, cartwheels, and other strength-based movements. This genre requires dedication, patience, and consistent conditioning as dancers work toward mastering new skills safely.

Acro training helps dancers develop core strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and body control. These skills can also support their technique and movement quality in other genres.

What it builds: Strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and body control.

Why Versatility Matters in Dance

While every dance style has its own unique qualities, the real magic happens when dancers bring these skills together. Training across multiple genres allows dancers to develop a broader movement vocabulary, adapt to different choreography, and approach challenges with greater confidence.

A ballet class can help a dancer refine their control and alignment. Tap can sharpen their musicality. Lyrical can strengthen their emotional connection to a performance. Hip-hop can encourage individuality and cultural appreciation, while musical theatre can help them become more engaging storytellers.

Each style contributes something valuable, and the skills dancers develop in one genre can often strengthen their abilities in another.

Versatility is not about mastering every style overnight. It’s about remaining open to learning, embracing challenges, and giving yourself opportunities to grow. Every class offers something new to discover!

At The Dance Factory, we encourage dancers to explore different genres, challenge themselves, and continue building the skills that help them shine both in and out of the studio.

Ready to keep growing? The Dance Factory still has select classes open for enrollment! Whether your dancer is just beginning their journey or looking to build on their existing skills, we have opportunities to learn, grow, and discover new styles.
